Taste: Was a little bland, think I didn’t add enough spices. I think with more, or better, spicing it could be a 4 without a problem. Not sure it’d make it all the way to a 5 though. It was good, but cajun should have a kick. A little oomph. Something. And it just didn’t have it :/
Preparation: Saute okra, add onions, tomato, garlic, celery, tomato paste. mix in shrimp and spices and ridiculous amounts of water. heat. Pretty easy in terms of prep, yaknow what i’m saying? Got tired of trying to peel the tomato (htf do you peel a tomato anyway?) and chopped it up half peeled
Recipe: We didn’t have the 20oz of okra the recipe called for, for 4 servings (which is about the shrimp we had). So I went with 16oz, it might be a bit un-okra-y. what a word Still don’t like bell peppers, so still didn’t add any, but everythign else went in. Reduced the water, since i’m simmering in a crockpot ( ~~ 0 water loss) vs a big sauce pan ( ~~ 25% wter loss for the cooking time, I estimate). Put in 4 or 5 cups of water, seemd OK. Also added some corn, for additional flavor. I mixed brown rice into mine, kiir put it in a bowl so they were more seperate. Thinking of throwing the rice INTO the gumbo next time, as an option. And more spices
Cost: Okra. Onion, tomato, garlic, celery, tomato paste. Shrimp. Lets assume you have a functional use for celery, and don’t have to buy the whole bunch for a single stalk like I did. Tomato paste you probably have, and you’re cooking so garlic tomatoes and onions are a given, right? We’ll count them anyway. Still, the shrimp is by far the most expensive. Overall, maybe 10$ total. Since it wants mostly fresh stuffs, can’t say that the bits are “in stock”, although you could probably get away with garlic powder and onion flakes. The shrimp and the okra are what set you back on this recipe, though, and it’s unlikely you happen to have a shrimp grounds in your backyard, so you probably still have to buy them
