Taste: OK, this is one of my mom’s dishes. I’ve been eating it for 20 years, and I’ve been making it myself for 8 or so. Duh, I like it Curry flavored. Yeah.
Preparation: Not too bad. Brown the ground-boca (or beef), toss in some onion, a bunch of curry powder, water. cook down, toss in box of frozen peas, allow it to finish cooking down. Couple minutes here and there, and then mostly wait.
Cost: Curry powder, peas, rice, ground boca. Curry powder can be pricey, but it lasts a while. The rest not too bad. I’d say under 5$, discounting the curry initial purchase.
RECIPE:
1lb ground boca/meat
3T Curry Powder
1 box frozen peas (12oz? 15?)
Onion
brown the boca in a pan, add 2 cups of water and 3tbsp of curry powder (more or less depending on your tastes. I put in large tbsps, so it’s probably 3.5 really, of moderately hot stuff. under 2 it (IMO) loses it’s power) Put in onion (I use about a T of flakes)
Cook ~10-15 minutes on low/medium heat (simmer). You’re evaporating the water back out. It’s there to let the powder mix well.
Add peas when the mixture is still a little soupy. Simmer off. My mom’s was always dry, but I think she didn’t do the water step and just mixed in the powder more carefully than I do. I usually simmer another 5 minutes or so, until it’s down to the liquid being more of a paste on the bottom of the pan.
Serve over rice, yum
